Living in Calgary means we are spoiled for choice when it comes to green spaces. With over 150 off-leash areas and 1,145 hectares of designated dog-friendly space, our city is undeniably one of the most dog-friendly in North America. But for pet parents in communities like Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, Evanston, and the Hamptons, finding the right park is about more than just open grass. It’s about safety, terrain, fencing, and finding a space that matches your dog’s unique personality.

At Matt+Hanna, we spend hours every day exploring these parks with packs of happy dogs. From the sweeping coulees of the North West to the river banks of the South, we’ve learned exactly which parks offer the best experiences (and which ones to avoid when it's muddy!).

Whether you are looking for a fully fenced environment to practice recall or a wild adventure through native grasslands, here is our expert guide to the best off-leash dog parks in Calgary.

1. Nose Hill Park (Northwest Calgary)

Best For: High-energy dogs, hikers, and nature lovers.

If there is one park that defines "dog walking in Calgary," it’s Nose Hill. As one of the largest urban parks in North America, it offers an immense designated off-leash area on the plateau that feels miles away from the city.

Why We Love It

Nose Hill is the "Crown Jewel" for our NW Calgary clients. The terrain is varied, offering steep coulees for a cardio workout and flat grasslands for endless games of fetch. The views of the downtown skyline and the Rockies are unbeatable.

  • Size: Massive (11 square km total, with huge off-leash zones).
  • Fencing: Mostly Unfenced. There are no barriers between the off-leash areas and the steep slopes or nearby roads at the park's edges.
  • Terrain: Native rough fescue grassland, gravel trails, and aspen groves.

Matt+Hanna Expert Insight

From Yvonne (Dog Walker & Pet Sitter): "I take many of my high-energy groups here. The sheer size of Nose Hill is perfect for breeds like Australian Shepherds and Huskies who need to burn serious calories. However, because of the wildlife (deer and coyotes are common), I always keep a close eye on the pack. If your dog has a high prey drive, this might be a 'long-line only' park for you until their recall is 100%."

Pro-Tip: The "Foxtail" Warning

Hanna (Our Grooming Expert) warns: "In late summer, Nose Hill is notorious for foxtails and spear grass. These sharp seeds can burrow into your dog's paws, ears, and skin, causing infections. After every walk here, check your dog’s toes and coat thoroughly!"

2. Sue Higgins Park (South East Calgary)

Best For: Socialization, recall training, and anxious owners.

Formerly known as Southland Dog Park, Sue Higgins is arguably the "safest" bet for new dog owners or those working on training. It is the largest fully fenced off-leash park in Calgary.

Why We Love It

This park is a doggy Disneyland. It features multiple separate fenced areas, meaning you can move to a quieter zone if the main area is too busy. It sits right along the Bow River, offering safe spots for dogs to dip their paws in the water without the risk of being swept away by a strong current.

  • Fencing: Fully Fenced. The perimeter is secure, with double-gate entries to prevent escapes.
  • Features: Agility equipment, training rings, open fields, and bush trails.
  • Community: Extremely high. You will meet hundreds of other owners here on a weekend.

Matt+Hanna Expert Insight

From Matthew (Certified Dog Trainer): "Sue Higgins is where I send clients who are just starting off-leash training. The fencing gives you a safety net. If you have a puppy or a rescue dog with uncertain recall, use the smaller training pens within the park first. It’s a controlled environment where you can build engagement before graduating to open spaces like Nose Hill."

3. Bowmont Park (Northwest Calgary)

Best For: Water lovers and variety.

Located along the northern bank of the Bow River, Bowmont Park is a favorite for our clients in Silver Springs and Dalhousie. It offers a unique mix of paved pathways, hiking trails, and designated off-leash zones.

Why We Love It

Bowmont offers a "choose your own adventure" experience. You can walk along the ridge for spectacular views or head down into the valley for river access.

  • Fencing: Partially fenced areas are available, but much of the park is open to the river and bike paths.
  • Water Access: Excellent access to the Bow River.
  • Warning: The park is shared heavily with cyclists.

Matt+Hanna Expert Insight

From Chloe (Dog Walker): "My dog Miso and I love the trails here. It feels like a mini-hike without leaving the city. Just be careful near the train tracks on the north side and the steep cliffs. I always leash up when we are transitioning between the upper and lower off-leash zones to ensure safety around the cyclists."

4. Edgemont Ravine (Northwest Calgary)

Best For: A quiet, neighborhood stroll.

For residents in Edgemont and Hamptons, the ravine system offers a fantastic network of off-leash gullies.

Why We Love It

Unlike the chaos of Sue Higgins or the vastness of Nose Hill, Edgemont Ravine feels intimate. It’s a linear park, which is great for dogs who like to keep moving forward rather than wrestling in a pile. It’s sheltered from the wind, making it a top choice during those freezing Calgary winter days.

  • Terrain: Grassy ravine with paved paths running parallel.
  • Vibe: Quiet, local, and community-focused.

5. Auburn Bay Dog Park (South East Calgary)

Best For: Small dogs and playdates.

While it's a bit of a drive for our NW clients, Auburn Bay is worth the trip for a change of scenery. It is a well-maintained, medium-sized park that is popular with young families.

  • Terrain: Flat, manicured grass (less mud than natural parks!).
  • Safety: Not fully fenced, but situated well away from major roads.

Safety First: Mastering the Off-Leash Experience

Taking your dog to an off-leash park is about more than just unclipping the leash. To ensure a positive experience, you need to be prepared.

1. The "Recall" Rule

Matthew's Training Note: "Off-leash does not mean out of control. By law in Calgary, your dog must be under voice control at all times. If your dog cannot come back to you when called away from a squirrel or another dog, they are not ready for unfenced parks like Nose Hill. Start with a long-line (a 15-30ft leash) to practice freedom safely."

2. Know Your Dog's Play Style

Eric (Dog Walker & Trainer) notes: "Not every dog is a dog park dog, and that is okay. Some dogs, like my Golden Retriever BaoBao, love everyone. Others, especially herding breeds or rescues, can get overwhelmed by rude dogs rushing safely into their face. If your dog shows signs of anxiety (tucked tail, hiding behind legs), it’s better to book a private solo walk than to force them to 'socialize'."

3. Coyote Awareness

Calgary is home to urban coyotes, especially in Nolan Hill, Sage Hill, and Evanston.

  • Keep moving: Don't stand in one spot.
  • Scan the horizon: Coyotes often watch from the top of hills.
  • Carry a whistle: A loud noise can startle a coyote away.

Why Choose a Professional Dog Walker?

We know that life in Calgary gets busy. Between commuting downtown and managing family life, you might not always have the time to give your dog the 90-minute off-leash adventure they crave.

That’s where Matt+Hanna comes in.

We don't just "walk" dogs; we provide enriching adventures. Here is why pet parents in Calgary NW and Toronto trust us:
